Microsoft Licencing Information

Who can purchase licences?

Microsoft Licences may be purchased by institutions only.

This means to businesses, kindergartens, schools and NZQA-accredited tertiary institutions.

Commercial licences are for business. Academic licences are for kindergartens, schools and tertiary institutions.

Licences may NOT be purchased by individuals, teachers or students, who are limited to the appropriate box product.

Teachers and students (school and tertiary) have their own boxed versions of some titles.

These versions are purchased in a retail box, but include three (3) installation licences (NOT three user licences!) so the teacher or student may install the software on a school computer, a home computer and a laptop for example.
NO additional licences may be added to the Student/Teacher version.

When would you buy licences?

When you have 5 or more users on the same site who want to use the software.

MS Licencing has a minimum purchase of five (5) licences.

When 5 or more people want to use the software, it is considerably cheaper to purchase a CD KIT and the required number of licences than to purchase boxed product.

You DO NOT need to buy ANY boxed product for licencing; just the one CD Kit.
Should you happen to already own a boxed product, however, you may add licences to that if you wish, starting with the 5 minimum licence purchase. In that case you will not need a CD Kit (but see "Advantages" below).

NOTE: The minimum five licences of an initial purchase may be made up of more than one title. For example, a business or school may purchase 2x Office Pro Licences, 2x Publisher Licences and 1x Encarta Premium Suite Licence (along with the relevant CD Kits). This will meet Microsoft's minimum requirements.

If your needs change, further licences may be purchased in the future in ANY quantity (i.e. one or more, to add to an existing licence pool).

NOTE: The CD Kit is ONLY available with licence purchases.

Advantages of a Licence CD Kit

Licences may be added to an existing boxed product, but the CD Kit is more convenient for installing over a network.

The CD Kit allows the network administrator to "push" the installation out to the relevant number of workstations without getting out of his/her chair.

Using the boxed product with added licences on multiple systems, on the other hand, means that the software will need to be installed by hand multiple times, to each workstation in turn. At $53.00, the CD Kit may be worth purchasing even if you do have the boxed product!

No user manuals, although these may be purchased separately from Microsoft.
