Creating Web Sites

What do you need?
Generally, a piece of software that that is designed for creating web sites. While it is possible to construct web pages in WORD or PUBLISHER, or other word processing programs, the resulting code is messy to say the least. The tools listed below will create web pages in standard HTML and CSS that can be uploaded as is with the comfort that viewers will see what you intended in their browsers.

For Younger Children
	Have a look at the offerings from Coffee Cup Software (Windows) and Rapid Weaver (Mac) as well below.
For Schools and Business
	Adobe Dreamweaver (Mac and Windows) A world-class web design tool that is very popular in schools, in business and with professional designers. Includes all the tools one would need, no matter what sort of site you're creating, including database applications and interactive sites. Fireworks is a very useful adjunct to Dreamweaver, used for creating menu systems, other graphics or even complete web pages. Fireworks generates the requisite HTML and underlying code. Flash completes the set, used for animations, video and other interactive content, again complete with supporting code. Fireworks and Flash are additional purchases, or the set can be purchased as a bundle.
	Rapid Weaver (Mac) Inexpensive but comprehensive web design software by RealMacSoftware that produces standard HTML, XHTML and CSS code, with a pretty and fully functional WYSIWYG editor that should suit adults and children alike. RapidWeaver is built in Mac OS X's native language, Cocoa. This allows it to easily integrate with Mac OS X and all the great new technologies Apple has to offer. RapidWeaver 4.0 takes full advantage of Leopard technologies, including Core Animation and Quick Look. We haven't used it, but it sure looks good! 30-day download trial available.
	Microsoft Expression Web 2 (Windows) Expression Web replaced the old FrontPage in Microsoft's line up of Office Products. Microsoft now has a credible web site creation tool to match Dreamweaver in most respects. It writes standard HTML and almost insists on the use of CSS for page layout and formatting. Whatever you can do with Dreamweaver, you can now do with Expression Web 2. It has had excellent reviews in the technical press. As it has just appeared, we can't comment on popularity yet. Microsoft also has supporting products for creating web graphics, animation and other adjuncts to Expression Web. These, too, may be purchased separately or as a bundle.
	Net Objects Fusion (Windows) Again, as with the products above, Net Objects Fusion creates standard code. It does take a rather different approach to the creation process, however. Nonetheless, the numerous tools and capabilities included in Fusion 11 sets it apart from other web site design programs. Its true drag-and-drop functionality and seamless integration with XHTML, CSS, JavaScript and XML make Fusion a useful choice for both designers and developers.
	Coffee Cup (Windows) Coffee Cup Software has a vast range of web creation tools available as downloads, including WYSIWYG design editors, HTML editors, FLASH editors, graphics editors, forms creation and so on. One advantage here is that each module can be downloaded as a free 30-day trial to see if it suits. A few simple modules could quite well suit children's needs as well. Something over 46 million people use their software, so it comes with a good pedigree.
	Avanquest Web Easy Professional (Windows) We haven't used this one, sorry, but it claims to be a standards-compliant WYSIWYG editor. With Web Easy Professional's extensive library of templates, graphics, animated GIFs, photographs, forms, objects, sounds and more... creating custom web sites with advanced features is now as simple as drag-and-drop! A download trial is available.

Xara	Xara produces web design software, including WebStyle, MenuMaker and Xtreme.
Adobe	While GoLive has been discontinued in favour of Dreamweaver, Photoshop is frequently used to prototype web pages. The resulting file can be written out in HTML if desired.
