Academic Software - What is it, and Who Qualifies?

Many of our web pages show two price structures for software titles, an academic pricing and a normal retail or commercial pricing..

Generally, software with an academic price is exactly the same product as the retail version. Only the price is different.

Some software publishers (but not all), such as Microsoft and Adobe, offer the academic world a special low price that is not available to other purchasers.

To qualify for the special academic low price where offered, you need to show that you belong to one of the following groups:

  • Tertiary Students who can produce a valid student ID, or e-mail a scan of one;
  • A teacher in an NZCEA approved institution (from Kindergarten upwards);
  • An NZCEA approved teaching institution at any level;
  • A high school student attending school full time (for some but not all publishers).

NZCEA approved institutions may purchase media packs and multiple licences, but individuals may not.

This is a very simplistic overview: each publisher has its own policies. For example, some will sell academic product only to schools and not to teachers or students, and so on.

If in doubt, please ask.
